NEW_LIVES receives funding from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation

The Fritz Thyssen Foundation is supporting NEW_LIVES with a generous grant for the organization of an international conference at the International Academic Forum Heidelberg (IWH), a central facility of Heidelberg University, in March 2024. Under the title "Towards Genomic Newborn Screening in Germany: Risks, Opportunities, Challenges", this conference will bring together renowned international experts in the field of genomic newborn screening who are associated with the International Consortium for Newborn Sequencing and the partner projects of NEW_LIVES.

The conference will take place around halfway through the funding period of NEW_LIVES and will discuss pivotal medical, ethical, legal, and psychosocial issues relating to the implementation of a genomic newborn screening program in Germany. On this occasion, we also will present initial results from the NEW_LIVES project to an international audience of specialists, including in particular a list of selection criteria for target diseases, which represents a revision, systematization and supplementation of the classic Wilson Jungner criteria.
