Final Reports 2016
Introduction
The 6th of Summer school for Clinical Periodontology and Implantology was held in Kopfklinik at the Universitaet of Heidelberg on August 1-12th, 2016 and organized by Prof. Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Kim and her team. This program is routinely performed every two years and involving qualified lecturers and participants from different contingents. This year, we had an opportunity to join this summer school program. Prof. Kim said that the idea for making this program is to create a forum where the researchers and clinicians from all countries can exchange and share their experiences. Beside the academic session, her further goals are to build a cross-cultural understanding and communication networking. On this 6th program, several delegates (dentist, periodontology postgraduate student, periodontist and implantologist) from Indonesia, Albania, Rumania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland were participated.
Review
Regarding the scientific part, we had a quite full time of planned schedule (from 09.00 am – 04.00 pm). The scientific lesson is divided into lecture and hands-on. The lecture is given through interactive discussion that enforced all participants to be active and create the learning environment. There were several competent speakers who involved in this program. Besides Prof. Kim, there were Prof. Dr. med. dent. Peter Eickholz (University of Frankfurt), Prof. Dr. med. dent. Ulrich Schlagenhauf (University of Wuerzburg), Prof. Dr. Koo (Seoul National University, Korea), Dr. med. dent. Sarah Sonnenschein (Heidelberg University), Dr. med. dent. Betzler (Heidelberg University), Dr. med. dent. Christian Mertens (Heidelberg University), and Dr. med. dent. Maurice Ruetters (Heidelberg University). Topics those given were comprehensive and updated with the current situation. Periodontal lectures that given are “Basic periodontology”, “How to perform a case presentation”, “Etiology of periodontal diseases”, “Clinical periodontal diagnosis”, “Microbiological diagnostic”, “Classification of periodontal diseases”, “Anti-infective therapy”, “The principle of full-mouth disinfection”, “Debridement by hand or by machine?”, “Scaling and root-planning”, “Non-surgical or surgical periodontal therapy?”, “Periodontal surgery: flap techniques”, “Furcation involvement”, ”Is periodontal regeneration possible?”, “Indication for the guided tissue regeneration (GTR)”, “Current status of regenerative therapy”, “Nutrition and periodontitis”, “Bladeless periodontal therapy”, “Periodontal medicine”, “Periodontitis and diabetes”, “Antibiotic I-prophylaxis”, “Mucogingival deformities”, “Antibiotic in periodontology II”, “Antibiotic in periodontology III”, “Supportive periodontal treatment”, “Prognosis of the teeth”, “Implantology: Key factors for predictable result”, “Implantology: Augmentation techniques for different indications”, “Erratic healing of extraction sockets: diagnosis and treatment from a different perspective”, “Treatment of peri-implantitis: what I’ve learned in recent 3 years”, “Treatment planning”, “Gingivectomy”, and “Periodontitis-extraction and setting implants?”. Besides lectures, we had a practical hands-on on pig jaw for “Periodontal surgery”, “Regenerative therapy with enamel matrix protein derivate (emdogain)”, “Tunnel preparation”, “Mucogingival surgeries”, “State of the art: Implantation/Augmentation Procedures”. During these two weeks, lectures were delivered in attractive ways such as evidence based tutorial, scientific journal analysis, cases interpretation, small group discussion, and individual presentation. Reviewing on scientific part, seminars were given by credible speakers from different universities. This will enhance the various perspectives because what their various experiences gave us a broad point of view. Updated lectures provided with scientific data also become positive value in this program. Small group discussion also becomes interesting part of this study. By having a discussion with other participants from other nations, we are enforced to learn, communicate, respect and tolerate with other opinions. This is a soft-skill that not every program had. Moreover, case presentation session was one of the important things in this program. Each of us should present our cases systematically in front of the class and have it discussed. We also had questions to be answered.
Beside academic part, non-academic part was enthusiastic part. Prof. Kim and her team have
planned a memorable trip to “Heidelberg University”, “Night Watchman tour”, “Castle of Heidelberg”, “Castle of Schwetzingen”, and “Speyer” on almost every day after scientific part (04.00 pm – end). The most memorable things are when we had hiking to Thingstatte Mountain. It is about 15 to 18 kilometers far distance. On the top of the mountain, the view of Heidelberg was incomparable and beautiful. We did enjoy the trip.
Understanding the purpose of non-academic part, we felt the relaxing time and unforgettable moment with other participants. This part was essential to support participant and keep them away from stresl. Final celebration was very thrilled because every delegate should give a performance. Participants from Indonesia presented traditional “Lenggang” dances that originally come from Betawi (Indonesia). Participant from Poland sung “Bee” song with different languages. Participant from Rumania taught us their traditional dance. Other participant from Slovakia duet with participant from Indonesia showed a “Stand-up Comedy” by having conversation one to another with each own language. This moment of friendship will favorable for our relation and attachment within participants and organizer as well.
Conclusion
This international summer school program showed a great potential learning outcome. This program taught us to be back to the basic, to follow our heart and not forget to place our feet in patients’ shoes in treat our patient. It really brought us to think deeply about “Serious Perio” effect for patient in the future, in 5 years, 10 years and maybe long life. The spirit to learn every decision from evidence based is truly inspiring. Beside periodontology and implantology issue from experts, this program also offers a character building and communication skill lesson. Multicultural and cases sharing within participants will bring a connection and attachment for further collaboration networking in periodontology and implantology. It is recommended for dentist, periodontists and implantologist to join and feel the warmth of this Summerschool program in Heidelberg University.

My tagline for this Summerschool is “This is the best time of my life”. I would like to say thank you to Prof. Kim (and other professors also) for sharing their knowledge and also the perio-residents for your great hospitality (I can’t imagine my 2 weeks in Heidelberg without the great time and excursions with you). I had a great 2 weeks of perio-sharing. Prof. Kim and her team prepared great topics to share with you. And also, the hands-on were very cool. I love it! This Summerschool opened another perspective about perio for me and I would very recommend it to perio people. You will get so much knowledge based on evidence and clinical experience from great professors. Beside academic things, this Summerschool allowed me to meet people from other countries. We shared some good times together in a beautiful city called Heidelberg. And also we got chances to strolling around Heidelberg, learnt their culture, and also the food! Don’t think twice to join this Summerschool. In the end, maybe Prof. Kim and team should make another Summerschool for advance in perio. See you again, Tschuss!!!

I never thought Summerschool for specialist program can be so fun and interesting. This Summerschool for Periodontology & Implantology, which was held from August 1st until August 12th,2016 at University of Heidelberg provides a well composition to explore knowledge and experience in periodontology AND to explore the beauty of the city and having fun whilst do it. I would like to thank my lecturer, Dr. Yuniarti for giving me and my friends this opportunity to learn the European style of periodontology. It was good to travel and study with friends and even a lot better when we met friends from another country, and kind host. The lectures enlightened me with new concept and perspective for periodontal treatment and periodontal diagnostic. The topics were complete package as a review of what I have learned in my residency programs.
Seminar sessions, where we divided into groups, were my favorite because we can apply what we just learned into discussion with others. We share our thoughts and our experience which make me learn how periodontist from other country especially Europe country treat periodontal patient. We had also a good opportunity to learn some skills through hands on session. There were quite a lot of skills lab with pig jaws and good instrument. Other than study time, we had an after school program like city tour (night watch lady tour), visited Heidelberg Castle, hiking (memorable experience) and visit another city around Heidelberg. So I had gained some knowledge and had so much fun for two weeks back then. In conclusion, I would like to thank and congratulate Prof Kim and team for their commitment, hard work, and hospitality in running this Summerschool program. I hope I can meet with this team and the other participants in the next international meeting.
