pAItient
Motivation The increasing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI systems in healthcare requires the constant research and development of new methods and models, taking into account the stakeholders involved as well as data protection and security-specific criteria. In this context, the creation of basic infrastructures for data use in healthcare plays a paramount role in supporting the development of AI-based, patient-centric, digital health applications.
The project is part of the BMBF's funding priority "Digital innovations for patient-centered healthcare".
Project duration 01.10.2020 to 30.09.2023
Project participants - German Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) - German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) - MINT Medical GmbH.
Goals and approach The goal of the pAItient project is the development and implementation of an innovation center for artificial intelligence, which offers a unified infrastructure for research and integration of AI solutions in healthcare. Building on the services of a Medical Data Integration Center (MeDIZ), a broad base of routine clinical data will be made available for the development of AI-based applications and brought together with a data protection and legally compliant regulatory system to be developed in everyday clinical practice. This environment is intended to facilitate the development of AI-based systems in patient care and to ensure protected, secure, privacy-compliant handling of clinical data. A key feature of pAItient will be that the AI algorithms and models to be trained will come to the data, not the data to the algorithms.
Perspectives for practice Through the AI innovation center of the pAItient project, a sustainably developed platform can be operated in the clinic in the long term, which will unfold direct benefits for care in terms of infrastructure. By harnessing clinical data for the development of AI applications, the project strengthens both Germany as a research location in terms of artificial intelligence and the healthcare sector through digital innovations.
