Entry Requirements

This Course is held in English. Course participants should have excellent command/high level of proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English. It's part time students only.

Content Overview

Community participatory involvement and civil society engagement are critical elements in advancing a public’s health. This advanced module is designed to provide knowledge and practical application skills for enhancing population health at community and societal levels. Current theory and practice from the health social sciences and public health will inform the practical development for community- and society- centered health strategies. These should involve and, potentially, empower communities and society at large with health.

The course is divided in two parts:

– Part I: The Health of Communities and Societies : Conceptual and Methodological Foundations from within Public Health and the Health Social and Behavioral Sciences (30 hours, including 10 hours of pre-reading and 20 hours of teaching content)

– Part II: Intervention Design for Public Health Programmes adressing Social and Community-level Determinants of Public Health (30 hours, including 10 hours of teaching, 10 hours of facilitated group and individual work and 10 hours of post-coursewriting)

 

Course Topics

– Concepts, methods and practical applications of the social and behavioural sciences applied to public health
– Conception and design of public health programmes addressing community-level or other social determinants of health

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course participants will be able to:
– appraise frameworks and conceptualizations for community and population health grounded in health social science;
– discuss multiple dimensions and pathways of social determinants of health;
– appraise ethics, human rights and equity issues in community and population health;
– formulate a short proposal for a community and societal health intervention based on multisectoral action

Schedule & Certification

Most of the short courses require full-time attendance from Mondays to Fridays, 9am - 5 pm. Of Fridays courses generally finish around noon If not stated otherwise, all classes and activities will also run on public holidays.

Students and course participants must attend full-time and successtully complete all the assessment components in order to receive a certificate of attendance or a grade report from Heidelberg University. tropEd students will be able to credit short courses towards the Master's programme at their home institution.

Course Fee

  • General Admittance: € 750.-
  • tropEd students: € 500.-

Included in the course fee is a non-refundable registration fee of € 200.-
Please register as soon as possible as the number of participants is limited.
Unfortunately, no Scholarships are available.

If the participant withdraws from the course

  • less than 6 weeks prior: 25 % of the course fee will be charged.
  • less than 4 weeks prior: 50 % of the course fee will be charged.
  • less than 2 weeks prior: the whole course fee will be charged.

The tuition fee does not include accommodation, insurance or other personal living costs during the stay.
