World Patient Safety Day (Tag der Patientensicherheit)
September 2024
On September 17, Heidelberg University Hospital took part in the World Patient Safety Day (Tag der Patientensicherheit) with numerous activities. The Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacoepidemiology joined forces with the hospital pharmacy to inform staff and patients about medication therapy safety - quizzes, interactive stations and display walls were used to show how risks in medication therapy safety can be reduced.
Longitudinal curriculum patient safety
July 2024
In preparation for the implementation of the National Competence-Based Learning Objectives Catalog for Medicine (NKLM), the Office of the Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Medicine is supporting the design and implementation of teaching curricula for selected key subjects. Together with representatives from various clinics, the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacoepidemiology was commissioned to develop and pilot a longitudinal curriculum on patient safety.
We are looking forward to this new task and the exchange with the lecturers, the Dean's Office and the students!
Career Development Program Faculty of Medicine
April and May 2024
Two employees of the Clinical Pharmacological Trial Center (KliPS) were accepted into the Faculty of Medicine's Career Development Program in April 2024. Evelyn Krohmer received a Rahel Goitein-Strauss scholarship (1-year funding) and Felicitas Stoll a short-term scholarship (6 months). In addition, Szymon Kmiecik from the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory (ACL) was accepted into the Medical Scientist Program in May 2024 (3-year funding).

Use of e-prescriptions
April 2024
Since January 1, 2024, the use of e-prescriptions for prescription drugs has been a legal requirement. At Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD), the first months of 2024 were highly successful thanks to the detailed preparation and pre-planned rollout: doctors issued almost 25,000 e-prescriptions in the first four months of the year! The process at UKHD is supported by the e-prescription team, consisting of members of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacoepidemiology and the ZDI (Centre for Digitization and Information Technology).

On March 14th 2023 Antje Blank was elected to the board of the German Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapy e.V. (DGKliPha) and to the "Specialist Training" working group.

Poster prize at the 9th German Pharm-Tox Summit
February 2024
Dirk Theile won a poster prize at the 9th German Pharm-Tox Summit in Munich for his work on the variable interaction risk of the two antibiotics rifampicin and rifabutin. The poster was entitled "Rifabutin, but not rifampicin, partially attenuates P-glycoprotein induction by concomitant P-glycoprotein inhibition through high-affinity binding to the inhibitory site".

Germany is to become more attractive for clinical drug trials
February 2024
Physicians from the Department of Clinical Pharmacology were involved in commenting on the BMG's Medical Research Act (MFG) presented in a draft bill at the end of 2023. A statement was submitted via the AGAH in February 2024, which also incorporated the department's perspective and decades of experience as a clinicla trial center, in trial management and in the design of investigator-initiated esearch.
Solutions to reduce material used in medicine packaging
February 2024
Around 3,000 tons of previously non-recyclable packaging material could be avoided every year in Germany alone if tablets and capsules were arranged in blister strips to save space. Doctoral Thesis
February 2024
Julie Nilles (Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Laboratory) defends her dissertation "Vergleichende mechanistische Analyse des induktiven Wechselwirkungspotentials von Rifampicin und Rifabutin" (Comparative mechanistic analysis of the inductive interaction potential of rifampicin and rifabutin) and graduates summa cum laude.

Sanofi iDEA-TECH Award for Pharmacoepidemiology

The €120,000 award enables the rapid launch of one-year projects with follow-up prospects. The section Pharmacoepidemiology led by Andreas Meid was successful with the project "Multi-approach Analysis staGe for model-Informed development of drug-Conjugated antiBodies with Updates (Live and via Liberal software) on Expected Treatment outcomes (MAGIC-BULLET)".

Poster prize at the DGKPha
November 2023
Emilia Picker from the Cooperation Unit Clinical Pharmacy won a poster prize at the annual conference of the German Society for Clinical Pharmacy (DGKPha) with the project "Challenges and opportunities at the interface between hospital, outpatient care services/caregiving relatives and the public pharmacy (CAPAA) - results of two focus groups".

Scholarship Landesgraduiertenakademie
October 2023
Katharina Hamburg, PhD student in the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Laboratory (MBL), has been awarded a scholarship by the Landesgraduiertenförderung to carry out her doctoral project entitled „Differenzierte Makrophagen als Zielzellen antituberkulotischer Rifamycine“ (Differentiated macrophages as target cells of antituberculous rifamycins).
GERMANY-WIDE E-PRESCRIPTION ACTION DAY
October 10th 2023
The aim of the Germany-wide e-prescription action day was to start issuing e-prescriptions, break down barriers and gather experience. The department's Medical Information Technology section accompanied this day in advance with training sessions and question-and-answer sessions on the topic of e-prescription and then tested e-prescription via AiDKlinik® in the complex care processes at the hospital. To date, a total of over 600 e-prescriptions have been issued in 11 different functional areas at Heidelberg University Hospital. For more information, see https://www.gematik.de/e-rezept-aktionstag.
DRUG INFORMATION SERVICE FOR KVBW CONTRACT PHYSICIANS
October 2023
As a supplement to the well-established internal hospital AID drug information service, KVBW physicians now also receive help in answering patient-specific pharmacological questions. The goal is to provide patients with sound information for needs-based drug management. The experienced AID drug information team of physicians and clinical pharmacists answers the questions on the basis of approval data, databases and scientific literature and provides practical recommendations in writing on how to proceed in individual cases. The new service is free of charge for KVBW contract physicians.
Second cohort of master’s program “Medication Safety”

The second cohort of the interprofessional, part-time master's program in medication safety will begin their studies at the start of the winter term 2023/2024. We are looking forward to exciting exchanges – particularly during the attendance weekend in Heidelberg on December 8 and 9. Olympia Morata Funding
July 2023
Gzona Bajraktari-Sylejmani will be funded by the Olympia Morata Program of the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University for two years starting in December 2023 with her project to establish diagnostic and therapeutic markers for the function of the NO-cGMP signaling pathway in endothelial dysfunction. The aim of the Career Development Program is to support qualified female scientists in obtaining a postdoctoral qualification or a comparable qualification at Heidelberg University

The following two dissertations were defended in July by scientists from the Coordination Unit Clinical Pharmacy: Robert Möcker ”Implementierung von Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung der Arzneimitteltherapiesicherheit in öffentlichen Apotheken am Beispiel eines interprofessionellen Medikationsmanagement-Projekts” (Implementation of measures to improve drug therapy safety in public pharmacies using the example of an interprofessional medication management project) and Janina Bittmann: “Einflussfaktoren auf die Akzeptanz von Medikations-Alerts” (Factors influencing the acceptance of medication alerts). Both graduated magna cum laude.

The following three dissertations were defended in June: Viktoria Jungreithmayr "Auswirkungen der Implementierung einer Digitalen Kurve auf Normalstation” (Impact of the implementation of an electronic prescribing system on general wards) and Viktoria Wurmbach ”Strategien zur Reduktion der Komplexität in der Arzneimitteltherapie” (Strategies to Reduce Complexity in Drug Therapy) (section Coordination Unit Clinical Pharmacy) as well as Lucas Wirbka “Adhärenz bei kardiovaskulären Arzneimitteln in der Post-Hospitalphase: Assoziation mit klinischen Endpunkten und Vorhersage künftiger Adhärenz von direkten oralen Antikoagulantien in Abrechnungsdaten deutscher Krankenkassen“ (Adherence to Cardiovascular Drugs in the Post-Hospital Phase: Association with Clinical Endpoints and Prediction of Future Adherence to Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Claims Data of German Health Insurance Companies) (section Pharmacoepidemiology). All three graduated magna cum laude.

IIT submitted via CTIS
May 2023
The Clinical Pharmacology Study Center KliPS was the first department at the UKHD to successfully submit an IIT (Investigator Initiated Trial) according to the German Medicines Act (AMG) via the EU portal CTIS (Clinical Trials Information System), which has been mandatory since February. Dietmar Hopp Foundation provides further funding for 2D drug printing
April 2023
The Dietmar Hopp Foundation provides a further 1.5 million euros to support the development of the already funded "2D drug printing" project as part of the overall funding for the establishment of paedKliPs, the Pediatric Clinical Pharmacological Trial Center. Funding is being provided for the organization and implementation of the first three pilot studies under the German Medicines Act (AMG) that will test the safety and efficacy of a new drug delivery form of hydrocortisone in 2D print format in adults, children and adolescents.
Press conference on ARMIN evaluation results
April 2023
On April 18, 2023, Hanna Seidling, Head of the Clinical Pharmacy Cooperation Unit, presented the results of the scientific evaluation of the ARMIN project, which were developed in cooperation with the Pharmacoepidemiology Unit (headed by Andreas Meid), at a press conference. They show, among other things, that patients participating in the model project had a reduced relative risk of death of 16 percent compared to a control group. Poster Award
February 2023
Viktoria Jungreithmayr has won the poster prize at the 13th Working Conference of the Pharmaceutical Care Networks Europe (PCNE). The poster resulted from a collaboration project with the Department of General Internal Medicine and Psychosomatics and was titled "Novel screening method to identify patients that benefit from the implementation of a pharmaceutical care intervention in the inpatient setting - a pilot study".

Christine Brockmüller, PhD student at the Clinical Pharmacological Study Center KliPS, receives a Kaltenbach Doctoral Fellowship from the German Heart Foundation e. V. to conduct her PhD project "Epidemiology of under/overuse of guideline-based therapy, especially anticoagulation, in atrial fibrillation taking drug interactions into account - a comprehensive analysis of medication data from the prospective ARENA registry of the Rhine-Neckar region".

Heidelberg Standards of Climate Medicine

Mortality is increased in hot weather, especially in the elderly and at the beginning of the heat season. It is suspected that pharmaceuticals may increase morbidity and mortality during heat waves. David Czock and Walter E. Haefeli have written a chapter on this in the book Heidelberg Standards of Climate Medicine, which is available here.
