Intraocular lenses (IOL)
The implantation of intraocular lenses into the eye is an integral part of today´s ophthalmological treatment. There are two major applications:
- as a replacement of the natural lens (cataract or refractive surgery)
- as an addition to the natural lens or to an already implanted artificial lens (refractive surgery)
As a standard procedure, monofocal implants are used that are able to correct short- or far-sightedness; that means they only produce one focal point. With further developments of intraocular lenses it is now also possible to correct several refractive errors with one lens, e.g. astigmatism and/or presbyopia.
Important areas of our clinical research are:
- Certification of new intraocular lenses (specially for the correction of presbyopia)
- Analysis of optical quality
- Calculation of intraocular lens power (biometry)
